Sailing School Rules and Regulations

1. The Nagawicka Lake Yacht Club Sailing School requires that all students wear a PFD (life jacket) whenever they are on the water. US Sailing regulations allow for the use of a Y flag (red and yellow diagonal stripes) which requires all sailors to wear life jackets when flown. The use of this flag is left to the sole discretion of the instructors or judge of said event.

2. All students will be required to pass the swimming test to the satisfaction of the instructor. If a student has passed the swimming test in previous years it will be left to the instructors discretion as to whether that student must retake the swimming test. Students please bring your swimming suits, dry clothes and towels on your first day of class. There will also be an inspection of each child's PFD to ensure proper fit and adequate flotation.

3. Bring your sailboat and certified life jackets the first day and every day following, weather permitting. Students will be sent home if they do not have life jackets or sailboats - no sailboat will have more than three aboard.

4. Personal property must be labeled with last name and/or boat number.

5. On "no wind" or "bad weather" days, classes will be held in the classroom at NLYC. Cancellation of the Wednesday race rest solely with the senior instructor.

6. All sailors must leave the club grounds immediately upon completion of each sailing school session. Instructors will not be responsible for students after their class time is over. Please be prompt in picking up your children. Likewise, bring children no earlier than 15 minutes prior to class time.

7. Non-Members have access to our facility such as parking and restrooms during their child’s class only. You must be accompanied by an adult member of NLYC if you remain on premises outside scheduled class.

8. THE FOLLOWING WILL NOT BE PERMITTED:

  • No swimming at the Yacht Club or off boats during the launching or docking of boats. Swimming shall not interfere with classes or boats.
  • No unauthorized use of motorboats during school hours.
  • No overnight mooring of any boats at the Yacht Club pier.
  • No smoking.
  • NLYC has a zero tolerance for drug use or alcohol use by minors. Use of controlled substances or alcohol by minors will be immediate grounds for dismissal.

If any student violates the rules and regulations of the sailing school - his/her name will be submitted to the board for review and possible expulsion. The instructor may at his/her discretion, reprimand such student by summarily sending him/her home for the day.
